THE amount of rubbish accumulating by the side of Chandler Road each year is disappointing, according to Merredin Shire natural resource management officer Tobias Vudzijena.
He is calling on community members to help make their town and surrounding environment beautiful this Clean Up Australia Day.
“We cleaned up the same road last year – the fact that we are coming back shows we are not really getting through to people with the non-littering message,” he said.
“It would be nice to tackle new areas but one year on, the same road is littered with rubbish once more.”
Mr Vudzijena wants community members to join him for Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday, March 7, to help make a difference.
Volunteers can register on the day and are asked to meet Mr Vudzijena at 8am at the shire depot on Telfer Avenue on Sunday.
“Last year we had 15 volunteers but this year we are celebrating 20 years of Clean Up Australia Day so I hope we can encourage people to get involved,” he said.
“This year’s theme is ‘just one’, meaning that one person can make a difference, and if you can pick up even one item of rubbish, it will be worthwhile.”
Volunteers will be split into groups and dropped off at different spots along the road to cover a large area.
Rubbish bags will be provided but volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, hats and sunscreen.
Mr Vudzijena said recyclable materials would be differentiated from other rubbish to minimise wastage.
However he said that if people were more respectful and didn’t throw rubbish out of their car windows in the first place, Clean Up Australia Day would be a lot easier.
