LOCAL 17-year-old Moira O’Brien-Smith is the recent recipient of Curtin University’s generous and prestigious scholarship, the John Curtin Undergraduate Scholarship.
On top of this sought-after scholarship, Moira received a Curriculum Council’s Certificate of Academic Excellence after obtaining 18 A grades in course units.
Moira attended North Merredin Primary School from 1999-2005 and left the family farm, south of Merredin, to move to Perth to attend Penrhos College in 2006.
From the start, she embraced the many opportunities placed upon her which allowed her to excel in a wide range of endeavours, lending her talents and energies to the community around her.
During her time at high school, she acted on numerous committees and demonstrated strong leadership qualities in every role she pursued.
Along with her outstanding academic achievements and valuable volunteering contributions her talents also shone on the sporting field.
For the past five years, Moira has participated in athletics, volleyball, netball, rowing, water polo and basketball to name a few.
Moira said the last few years of high school, especially year 12, had been very busy.
“Balancing school, study, sports training and competitions, waitressing at a local organic café, going out with friends, being away from home and living with my sisters was a tough gig,” she said.
“It did get hectic, especially around tests and exams; sometimes I would be up until late at night studying, only to wake up early to study before training and making my own breakfast, lunch and dinner, all before the school day started.
“I studied heaps but made sure I did all the fun things in life too, it was a gruelling year but absolutely amazing.”
