A YOUNG Merredin woman with a talent for acting will appear alongside Australian actress Jessica Marais and Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel in a big-budget film to be released this year.
Twenty-year-old Chloe Flockart grew up in Bruce Rock and Merredin and works at the Merredin Westpac Bank.
She was pursuing her love of acting through the Merredin Repertory Club when she was talent-scouted by a friend with connections in the film industry late last year.
She then auditioned and was selected to play the role of a university student in the Western Australian film Needle, a thriller that sees a group of university students picked off by a serial killer one by one.
The Hollywood-style film has been generating plenty of excitement in Perth and paparazzi flew in to photograph the stars as they shot the film in various locations around the city.
Chloe said being involved with the film was a “mind-blowing” experience, although it was a lot of hard work.
“The sets were super busy all of the time and filled with multiple cameras, huge spotlights to make it look like summer when in fact it was raining most days we filmed, and hundreds of crew running around carrying props and costumes,” she said.
“The day can start as early as 7am for cast members, even earlier for crew, and you might not finish until 1am or 2am.
“Even as an extra, you need to spend ages getting your hair and makeup done and take at least three changes of clothes as you might get wet, sweaty or sometimes dirty.
“You might spend three hours working on a scene that only ends up making 15 seconds in the actual movie.
“At one point my character had to run up a hill next to the male lead, played by Michael Dorman, and we had to reshoot that take 18 times – then shoot it all again from another angle – so I ran about 3km for the sake of 10 seconds of film.”
Chloe said she was prepared to be ignored by the cast and crew as she was “only an extra”, but found the cast, who included Khan Chittenden (Blue Water High, Equius) and Jessica Marais (Packed to the Rafters), were happy to chat.
“After a while you tend to forget that these people are famous – it’s so interesting to watch them do what is their paying job,” she said.
Needle’s release is due to coincide with Halloween this year.
Since her role in Needle, Chloe has further pursued her passion for acting by appearing in a number of other small film roles and a musical while still living in Merredin and working at the bank.
She said there were a surprising number of film opportunities available in Perth for anyone who was interested and coming from the country needn’t hold anyone back.
“There is actually a lot of filming going on in Perth, it is just a matter of knowing where to look, and searching on the internet for film auditions,” she said.
“Once you appear in one film, by being on set you can also meet associate producers and directors from other companies who are undercover scouting for talent.
“My advice is to go to some of the screen acting courses offered in Perth, because not only will you learn about screen acting, but you will also make some awesome contacts and who knows – you might score a role in a film.”
