Relief for farmers at harvest end

21 Jan, 2010 01:31 PM
FARMERS around the Wheatbelt have been relieved to stow their headers and head for the coast after a good end to a somewhat difficult year.

In the Kwinana East Zone, 2.435 million tonnes has been received to date and a handful of farmers still harvesting will likely finish by the end of the week.

Bodallin, Koorda and Merredin are the only three CBH receival points in the Kwinana East Zone still open.

Kwinana East Zone manager Allan Walker said the season’s takings were slightly below the 2.5 million tonne estimate.

“The Kwinana East Zone failed to receive the late rainfall, and the dry finish saw yields come in lower than expected and the quality of the crop was quite disappointing,” he said.

Overall the harvest season for the rest of Western Australia went smoothly.

Earlier in the season the total WA crop was estimated to reach about 11.8 million tonnes, but Kwinana East and Albany zones’ dry finish impacted on the State’s overall quality and yields, bringing it down to just above the 10-year average of 10 million tonnes.

Merredin farmer Pep Alvaro said he took his last paddock off on Thursday and was heading for the coast the very next day.

“The harvest this year wasn’t too bad considering the amount of rain we had, it was reasonably dry, and there were a lot of screenings around and small grain,” he said.

“It was a little bit below average, and it was certainly very challenging, but it could have been a lot worse.”
