School wins Anzac award

11/09/2008 10:55:00 AM
MERREDIN Senior High School has won the Western Australian Secondary School Category and the best local history research undertaken by students in this year’s Anzac Day Schools Awards.

The school will be presented with $1,000 and a commemorative plaque as the State winner and $500 and a second plaque for the research winner.

School principal Kath Ward said the students, along with teacher Julie Tiller, had devoted a considerable amount of time to the Anzac Day project and should be congratulated on the effort.

The Year 10 English students had researched the soldiers names listed on the Merredin War Memorial as part of their term one project.

The students gathered information from the State Library, the Returned Services League and knowledge from family and friends.

In a ceremony in April, students took turns to read extracts of their research into the fallen soldiers and gave the listeners an insight of what it was like for the soldiers in various conflicts.

The students had also prepared an elaborate display of their research which was used as a backdrop to the presentation in front of invited guests and their peers.
