Seniors to become computer-savvy

07 Feb, 2012 02:54 PM
THE Australian government has committed $15 million over three years for the provision of 2000 internet kiosks to organisations that support seniors and wish to host a Broadband for Seniors Kiosk and participate in this project.

The Merredin Community Resource Centre (CRC) has been a part of this project and would like to welcome seniors in the community to use the Broadband for Seniors kiosks that are held within the CRC.

There will be one-on-one training at all times to help people understand new technologies. This is a free service to seniors and is a great opportunity to learn at a pace that suits the person.

The project aims to provide seniors with free access to Broadband for Seniors kiosks, help them gain confidence using computer technology and to build community participation and social inclusion amongst senior Australians.

It benefits seniors who feel threatened by new technology and the internet.

It will enable seniors to learn for free, how to use a computer, access the internet and communicate with friends and family via email.

According to government figures, only one in five Australians aged over 65 currently use the internet.

For more information or to book an appointment, contact the Merredin CRC on 9041 1041.
