Wheatbelt woman wins fashion festival award

29 Oct, 2009 11:31 AM
A MUKINBUDIN woman has won the Mercedes-Benz Designer of Tomorrow Award at the 2009 Perth Fashion Festival.

Kristen Shadbolt’s fashion label Paper Skye was among three finalists nominated by fashion industry experts for the prestigious award at the Burswood Grand Ballroom on September 10.

As well as industry recognition, she won a necklace of silver, black diamonds and mother of pearl from Kailis Pearls.

Aged just 22, the Wheatbelt born and bred girl was one of the youngest designers to be nominated.

Miss Shadbolt grew up on her parents’ farm between Nungarin and Mukinbudin, and attended Mukinbudin Primary School before attending high school in Perth.

She graduated from fashion studies at TAFE in 2007 and now works full time as a textile designer for Sydney’s Karolina York while living in Perth and lecturing part time at TAFE.

She established Paper Skye last year, and fashion watchers have already predicted big things for the label, which specialises in delicate, elegant designs and relaxed everyday wear.

Miss Shadbolt added a touch of luxury to every piece through handdyeing and smocking.

As well as winning the Mercedes-Benz Designer of Tomorrow award, she had the opportunity to showcase her designs on the runways throughout the fashion festival.

“It was amazing that people in the industry had heard about the label and were familiar with my work - it was an incredible experience,” she said.

“I’m grateful to have the job I have, because it can be hard for designers to get recognised.”

Miss Shadbolt also entered her designs in the Style Aid fashion show earlier this year, which raised money for the AIDS Council.

She said she planned to continue her fashion career in Perth.

“Because Perth is so small, there’s a strong network here for helping young designers,” she said.

“I’ve applied for a grant to travel to New York next year, but otherwise I will stay in Perth and try to really establish my label here before finding an agent to stock my range across Australia.”

Miss Shadbolt said she often visited her parents and friends in the Wheatbelt and that their support had helped her along the way.

Her advice for others wishing to pursue a career in the fashion industry was simple.

“You just have to be very passionate - it’s not about money, it’s all about doing something you love, and if you love it, you’ll do everything you can to make it work,” she said.

Paper Skye is stocked at Method Clothing, Mt Lawley and online at www.fashionwa.com.
