EXTRA sporting and recreational facilities will be available to the Merredin regional community thanks to nearly $10,000 raised by the Merredin Community Crop.
The crop, which is planted and harvested by local volunteers, was harvested on December 23.
Proceeds go towards the sports council, which uses the money for facilities in the Merredin Regional Community and Leisure Centre.
Volunteer Andrew Crook said the crop of Mundah feed barley was planted on about 70 hectares of land, which was made available by the shire and Cooperative Bulk Handling, near Crooks Road in West Merredin.
“The crop was planted in late June 2009 with local machinery dealers Hutton and Northey providing the equipment to put the crop in,” he said.
“Volunteers spent a day seeding the crop and later donated their time again to harvest the crop, which took about three hours.
“TransPlus carted the grain and Liberty Fuels provided the fuel.
“The crop was a success thanks to all the businesses and volunteers who pitched in.”
He said the community crop had been an ongoing project since the days when the community was raising money to build the leisure centre.
“Last year, money raised from the community crop was used to install a PA system in the Grandstand Bar, which has been well utilised,” he said.
