THE Merredin Shire has received $88,000 in Federal Government funding to upgrade local cycling infrastructure.
The funding is for the Roy Little Park Bike Path project, which will involve the construction of 900 metres of dual use path around Roy Little Park and the lake area, and will connect to other town attractions.
Merredin shire chief executive officer Frank Ludovico said building the track would start in the new year.
“We’re pleased to have received this funding for the bike track,” he said.
“It will benefit the community by encouraging people to be physically active.”
The funding is from the $40 million National Bike Paths Projects fund, part of the government’s Economic
Stimulus Plan.
Agricultural Region MLC Matt Benson said the investment in local bike paths was an important part of social infrastructure for the local community and would also boost local employment during the construction stage.
“Quality cycling infrastructure encourages people to get out of their cars, which helps to reduce traffic on our roads and benefits our environment,” Mr Benson said.
Mr Ludovico said the shire would employ local suppliers for the track construction.
