24 Sep, 2009 12:01 PM
IN RECENT games played at the Merredin squash courts, Racquet Pounders defeated Drivers, two matches to one.

On another court, Backhanders defeated Court Raiders three matches to one with the final points being 87 to 83.

Number ones had a good match with Wade Brereton defeating out of form Neville Middleton three games to one.

Middleton won the first game 9 to 4 but Brereton came back in the second to win 9 to 4.

Brereton then went on to win the third game 9 to 5 and fourth game 9 to 7 with the final point tally being 31 to 25.

On court three, Fitness Fanatics had a convincing win over Drop Shots, four matches to nil.

The Level Fours played a nail biter of a game between Sheldon Hutchings and Andrea Bertolini with the first two games going to Hutchings 9 to 3 and 9 to 6.

In the third game, Bertolini came back 9 to 6, followed by 9 to 7 in the fourth, but it was Hutchings who finally played the winning shot in a long fifth game to win 9 to 7.

Level Three players Taphuma Vudzijena and Diane O’Brien had an excellent game with Vudzijena finally winning three matches to one. Game scores were 9 to 7, 9 to 1, 8 to 10 and 10 to 9, the last two games going down to the wire.

Next week will be the final round in what has been an exciting round of squash. Good luck to all players.

Some of the umpiring decisions were in contention last week which prompted the committee to look at holding a coaching and referee clinic in the next season to improve this important aspect of the game.

The clinic will be conducted during one of the fixtured rounds and will be presented by professional squash coach Mike Cornish, who regularly conducts junior clinics with the primary schools in the district.
