The Merredin Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service hosted its annual Twilight Competition on the October 24 and 25, which is a competition for under 17s.

Eleven brigades making up 21 under 14 teams and 17 under 17 teams competed over the weekend.

Brigades attended from Esperance, South Kalgoorlie, North Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross, Kellerberrin, Northam, Armadale, Mandurah, Harvey and Bunbury.

The Saturday events provided teams with the opportunity to show their skills in the dry work events aiming for the quickest time to complete the events.

The Sunday morning began with the two-person flaked hose and hydrant race, where teams and individuals competed in heats and the winners of the heats moved into the finals. These two events were the highlight events of the competition.

The wet work events took place after this and showed how teams must work together to complete the task of supplying water from the hydrant through hoses connected together to finally hit a target and stop the clock.

Champion Under 14 fire-fighter went to Cameron Lamonaca. Champion Under 17 fire-fighter went to S Cawfield.

Champion Under 14 team was won by Bunbury. Champion Under 17 team was won by Esperance 1.

Overall winner on combined points went to Bunbury on 43 points followed by Esperance 1 on 36 points and Esperance 2 on 15 points.

A new division called Pee-wees aged 6 to 10 displayed their skills for the first time with Merredin having two new members, Bianca O’Donnell and Sean Sandercock.

Merredin’s Under 17 team was made up of Jonothan King, Lenwil Tanola, Nathan Scapin and Anthony Palmer.

The Under 14 team was made up of Tarlisha O’Donnell, Dylan Sandercock, Nathan Carlson and Scott Stewart.

The Zone Championship will be held in Kellerberrin this Sunday.

Event organisers thanked all their helpers and sponsors Eziway, Great Eastern Freightlines and Outback Aromas for their contributions over the weekend.
