 New coach for Burracoppin Cats

New coach for Burracoppin Cats

26 Nov, 2009 11:04 AM
Burracoppin Football Club is looking to the WA Football League to bolster its hopes this season.

Former WAFL player Tim Morton, who played for Swan Districts, has been selected as the team’s new coach and will start training the team in 2010.

The Cats are keeping their other two secret weapons under wraps for now, but all three are confirmed and will travel from Perth to the Wheatbelt every week in 2010 for training and games.

Team president Rohan Day said the new additions were sure to give a boost to the team, who finished in the bottom four of 2009’s competition.

“The goal for next year is to make it to the finals, and hopefully the grand final, as well as to build supporter numbers and player numbers at the club,” he said.

Morton, who works in Perth for the Education Department, played for Swan Districts for a number of years before becoming involved in country teams, most recently Beverly Football Club.

He also played for the Northam Federals in 2006 which saw them bring home the flag, before spending two years backpacking around the world with his wife.

The well traveled adventurer is now keen to get on board with the Cats and is looking forward to a strong season.

“It will be my first time coaching so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do,” he said.

Morton visited the Burracoppin oval and met some of the players and committee members last week.

He said he had a few training strategies up his sleeves to help the Cats do their best in 2010.

“The first bit will obviously be working out what sort of players we’ve got and what we can do with them, then the strategy will evolve from there,” he said.

The team currently boasts former AFL Eagles, Port Power and Adelaide Crows player Ian Downsborough as well as former Swan Districts layer Matt Barnett.

Mr Day said pre-season training would begin on Friday, February 12 and all new members were welcome.
