PUNCHING and kicking your way to a fit and healthy body is also the perfect way to de-stress, according to three new staff starting at the Merredin Squash and Fitness Centre.
Matt Murfit, originally from New Zealand, moved to Merredin to take on the assistant manager role at the centre.
Erin Arnol, from Tasmania, recently moved to Merredin to work as a physical education teacher at the high school but will also be offering Body Kombat classes at the gym.
The gym also has a new trainee, Aleisha Western, a Merredin local who started at the gym this year and is completing a certificate III in fitness.
Mr Murfit said he obtained a degree in psychology and worked in marketing before deciding that he would like a more active lifestyle as a fitness trainer.
He said keeping fit and helping other people achieve their goals attracted him to the new career and he was looking forward to implementing new fitness programs for the gym’s nearly 100 members.
“I will provide personal training, circuit classes and I also hope to start boxing classes in the future,” he said.
“I’m especially aiming to help those who want to get into sport or improve their sporting ability by getting fitter and stronger, for example footy players.”
Miss Arnol said Body Kombat was part of the Les Mills fitness program, which consisted of choreographed moves to music and was easy for anyone to learn.
“It’s based on mixed martial arts such as boxing and karate, and is a really good way to unleash your stress,” she said.
“The moves are done individually so you are not actually fighting anyone and it gives a great aerobic workout as well as increasing strength.”
The gym also runs two other Les Mills classes, which are Body Balance, based on pilates moves and Body Pump, a workout with weights.
Miss Arnol’s Body Kombat class will run every Wednesday starting on March 10 at 5.30pm.
Gym owner Rosemary Gerrand said memberships were open to anyone over the age of 15 and programs could be modified to cater for any fitness level.
