Redbacks sting in final

04 Mar, 2010 10:51 AM
THE Redbacks became reigning premiers on Friday, February 19 after defeating the Strikers in the Merredin Women’s Softball grand final.

It was a very competitive game played well by both sides.

After winning the toss, the Redbacks batted first and got 25 over the plate. Strikers battered out of order early in the game leading to a loss of runs for one inning, resulting in only getting one home for the game. One of the strongest batters for the night was Ricky O’Neil.

The medal count and windup were held on Saturday night with the winners being Nat Hargraves of Stribacks and Kylie Howard of Redbacks.

Strikers player Jess Howe said it had been a difficult season due to a decline in players supporting the sport.

She said the association had gone from having eight teams in 2003 to having only two (Redback and Strikers) in recent years.

To improve the competition, a couple of years ago players from both teams merged to form a third team, the Stribacks.

Games are played every Friday night in season with one team playing twice each week against the other two teams.

The three-team association practice together regularly and said softball was a very enjoyable sport with a great social spirit.

They said they were hoping to promote the sport more next season to give the association a boost.

Anyone interested in joining can contact one of the players or the recreation centre to get involved.
